Chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) is a chronic itching condition that is particularly common in patients on hemodialysis. It is a serious and common condition that is generally under-recognized and under-reported.
CKD-aP can significantly reduce patients’ quality of life (QoL) through the urge to scratch, impaired sleep, and depression, and can lead to worsening medical outcomes in severely affected patients.
The pathogenesis of CKD-aP is multifactorial; while formally attributed primarily to the accumulation of uremic toxins, new research indicates a significant role for kappa opioid receptor (KOR) dysregulation.
Chronic kidney disease–associated pruritus (CKD-aP), sometimes called uremic pruritus, is a common, distressing, and under-recognized condition.
This informational video, led by Dr. Ellie Kelepouris, focuses on the various causes of pruritus in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis.
Numerous publications including patients on hemodialysis have reported that moderate-to-severe pruritus is associated with reduced quality of life, poor sleep quality, and increased heathcare costs.
This informational video, led by Dr. Anjay Rastogi, addresses the unmet need in patients with CKD-aP on hemodialysis.
CKD-aP may result from a combination of uremic toxins, peripheral neuropathy/paresthesia, dysregulated inflammatory signaling, and/or imbalance of opioid receptor activity.
This informational video, led by Dr. Edgar Lerma, discusses the multifactorial physiology of CKD-aP.
Symptoms of CKD-aP are subjective and multidimensional; therefore, patient-reported data are crucial for quantifying baseline disease status and response to therapy.
This informational video, led by Dr. Kam Kalantar, reviews the important patient-reported outcome tools for monitoring CKD-aP.

This pair of videos highlights the utility of patient reported outcome (PRO) instruments in the dialysis clinic. As a Nephrology healthcare provider (NHCP), you will learn how to:
A) best use simple and validated PRO instruments,
B) interpret the results obtained in a scientifically accurate manner, and
C) convert the responses into NHCP-led actions to improve the care of your patients.
Presented as part of the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) webinar series 2021.
Patients with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD) may suffer from several intrusive symptoms and complications such as pruritus or fatigue. Many of these symptoms are often under-reported but can still have a significant impact on QoL. The high symptom burden for patients on dialysis is also associated with increased hospitalization and mortality rates.
This educational and interactive webinar series explores various symptom-based complications for patients undergoing dialysis. Each 1-hour webinar explores specific aspects of dialysis-dependent CKD symptoms and complications.
